August 6th is known in history for two things. My birthday, and as the day when the US dropped the first nuclear bomb used in war, in Hiroshima. I’m starting to wonder if this pattern of birthdays on days of national tragedy is a family thing. My dad was born on September 11th and died on January 6th. Go figure.
In any event, this August 6th was destined to be a good one. Our drive was about three and a half hours, the destination was Gros Morne National Park where we’ll stay for four nights. We’re psyched for this park, its a fan favorite from all we’ve read. It’s a World Heritage Site. It’s also a land of icebergs, whales, puffins, unending coastline, the freshest of seafood, and the nicest people one could hope to meet. More on them later.
We listened to some Sunday news on satellite radio, today found Pence, Christie, and Don lawyers giving their spin on things. I never fathomed a day when it would be so hard to agree on simple facts, facts that are available to all of us. Though it always feels insufficient, we need to celebrate those willing to occasionally pop their heads out of the foxhole and blurt out the obvious. You know, can’t we all agree that Italian satellites and Hugo Chavez ten years after his death are responsible for our election outcomes?
We stopped for a late lunch at Java Jacks, which turned out to be a great find. It sits on the harbor in Rocky Harbour NL, and is run by an award winning chef. https://javajacks.ca
We pulled into an amazing site at Gros Morne NP. There were eight sites perched right on the water in Sally’s Cove. Not bad when you can look out Shirley’s window and see the surf:) There was a short ladder that took us down about twenty feet to a rocky, western facing beach. Nice!
Here’a a mildly interesting factoid. Newfoundland time is an hour and a half ahead of Indy time. We’ve yet to look up the genesis of the half hour thing, but hell, why does it matter, all we have is time. Who cares how you keep track of it?
We cashed in early to the sound of the surf, a happy birthday indeed!
