Friday, August 18

Today was the start of two of our favorite days of the trip. Yesterday we had scoped out a place to boondock, meaning a random place to camp outside of an established campground. It was near the town of Elliston, a tiny burg known mainly for its puffin colony, the colony we visited yesterday. Down the road from the peninsula was a perfect spot to pull off and hang for a few nights. Check it out. We had the puffin peninsula on one side, the town harbor on the other, with big water in between.

We hung out with Shirley all day today, soaking in the beauty. Hangin on the coast watching the puffins frolic...

Sunset was really cool. I flipped on Stevie Wonder's Talking Book album, grabbed my binoculars, and zoomed in on the thousands of puffins bobbing in the sea. When they turned the right direction their white breasts shimmered in the sunlight. Sublime:)

We met one of our "neighbors", an actual homeowner who lives close by. She was with her deaf dog Hughie. She seemed melancholy to me. I think I know why. She walked to the spot you see in the photo below every day with Hughie, sat for a few moments, and moved on. Though we were a half mile or so to her house, we were parked in her "back yard". She's likely extra sensitive because she bought her home years ago before puffin viewing on the peninsula became a "thing". Her house is right next to the peninsula, and the town put up a walkway for tourists to use that is immediately adjacent to her front yard. Tourists stream by constantly. I felt guilty each time I saw her. Not guilty enough to leave though...

We ended the night with a North Atlantic salmon stir fry that my love whipped up and some great star gazing, then cashed in to the sounds of the sea.

A pretty damn successful day.
