We were up early to do our final packing, then hit the road about nine. At the start of every drive I play Tom Petty's tune Time To Move On, sometimes coupled with Willie's On The Road Again. Music always sets the mood.
The first few days we'll be doing lots of driving to get us up the St Lawrence into Canada. Today's drive was uneventful. We did a couple podcasts, Jen Psaki was the guest on the Bulwark's Next Level podcast, and Jon Meacham joined David Axelrod on the Axe Files. Smart, accomplished folks having smart conversations about the unprecedented times we find ourselves in. For Lincoln fans, Meacham discusses his new Lincoln book at length so check it out.
Our tunes included a couple shows on the jazz channel of satellite radio. Teri Lynn Carrington hosts a show, as does Marcus Miller. We saw Carrington a few years ago at the Newport Jazz Festival, she's a fantastic drummer that always has a hip band. We saw Miller at the Jazz Kitchen with Sam & Michelle a few years back when he was touring with his Afrodeezia album. It ranks as one of my all time favorite live shows, he's a really compelling, cool guy.
We bunked at the Rusty Nickel Brewery in the metropolis of West Seneca, NY. It's a "Harvest Host", which are wineries, breweries, and farms that allow trailer people like us to stay one night with the hope that we'll buy something at their joint. We obliged with a couple cocktails and dinner, then hit the sack early.
The only downer of the day was the wildfire smoke. At our destinations everything looks good, but the trip north takes us through several impacted areas. It's the same reminder we had in Spokane last year, we have a long way to go to deal with climate change in coming decades.
A successful first day...
