Today was a travel day. We reluctantly had to leave Gros Morne NP. We had found it to be a truly enchanting place, one that seemingly sits on the edge of the world. But in the words of Tom Petty, it was time to move on. Here are a couple shots from the beach by our campsite in Gros Morne NP.
Our destination was Dildo Run Provincial Park in the Twillingate region. I’ll not attempt to make a witty quip about the name, other than to suggest that fans of it look up the origin of the band name Steely Dan.
As usual we drove a section of the Trans Canada Highway, part of which is also part of the Viking Trail. It rained the entire way, and for a couple hours it rained hard. Shirley can be a little tricky on windy, mountainous roads so we took our time. We listened to a podcast with Derek Thompson talking to a Harvard economist who recently completed a study on college admissions and the super rich. Sandboxes for the wealthy usually don’t interest me and I hadn’t paid much attention to this topic. But it was an interesting discussion and this study sounds like it’s getting traction so fellow nerds may want to check it out.
We hit two roadside markets along the way. One for produce, and a seafood market that sat on the coast. We bought a couple pre-cooked lobsters, we don’t have a pot big enough to cook those big suckers. We also discovered what flippers were. We’d seen them mentioned on signs several times and had been wondering. Turns out they’re seal flippers. Apparently they’re kind of steak like, high in oil content, good to grill, and popular in these parts. Something about eating Flipper’s flipper just didn’t seem right to me. Or was he a dolphin? Of all parts one might eat, eating the flipper seems a little on the nose don’t ya think? Regardless, we had no such hesitation in devouring a poor lobster’s claws:)
The downside of the day was I had caught a little bug, not of the fly or mosquito variety. I had chills and a little fever for the drive, and felt punky into the evening. This too shall pass…
